Anyone read any just absolutely horrible books? If so, give everyone a head's up and maybe tell a reason why you thought it was so horrible.

ANYTHING by Charles Dickens just about. The man is just WAY too lengthy in detailing things in his books. He takes 10 pages to describe a rock that happened to be under his villain's foot! That's just absurd to me. Bleck. I'll do without all the nonsense description, thank you.

I also wasn't too fond of My Antonia. I forget who it's by, but I had to read it in school. It made no sense and was just too much of a downer for me. The book really had no direction and I was expecting it to go somewhere when it didn't.

I always like to stay postive about the books that I read! I know I have hated some, like I know, but I cannot remember! I thought that this one book was going to be dumb, The Time Machine, but then I was like the only one who liked it! I personally feel that you have to be positive about the books you read!!! B) B) B)
In Flames
Seriously, and no offense to anybody, but Tolkien's books are horrible. I tried to read them and nearly fell asleep.
SailorStar16
I really want to read his books and everything, cause I loved the Harry Potter series and I kinda heard they wre some what the same! The delt with some stuff, but I tried reading the Hobbit on a car trip and I could barely keep interested!! I AM SORRY!! I really want to read them, but can I say boring! I always try to keep a postive attitude about it but I mean holy moly sleepy time or what! SORRY JENNNY IF YOU ARE READING THIS! Plus the movie's are just as good as the books so I will see them! ! B) B) B)

I hate reading books in school!! Reading is a hobby and it should not be inforced!!! Books are meant to be fun, not as a form of punishment!!! angry.gif

worst book ever: A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

How RANK, BORING and oh my god how gAY. trust me it was THAT bad.
SevenSins
When I was in 5th grade, I tried to read "Thames Doesn't Ryme With James" which was some corny, middle school love book about some chick falling in love with some dude in England. I hated it so much, I tried to feed it to my dog.
Predat0r
I don't like Sci-fi or fantasy books. I read first 100 pages of harry potter + the phillospher's bawls and hated it. I tried reading LOTR - that sucks too. I like something believable like Tom Clancy or something funny. I dunno the appeal of LOTR and HP.
RazorBlade
I'm a huge fan of Sci fi/ Fantasy, and most other forms of literature. The Worst Book I ever read would have to be "Old Man and the Sea." HOW MANY PAGES DOES IT TAKE TO CATCH A BLOODY F****ING FISH?!?!?!

Edited to add, a close runner up is "Wuthering Heights." I can't think in those insepid of terms for more than 5 pages without getting sick.
DivineWolf
I also love fantasy books and read them exclusively. and am always on the look out for more. but a book I have tried to read 3 times now but I cant is "The Crystal Cave" by Mary Stewart. i mean it seems good and all. but even now I find it so hard to keep track of wtf is going on in that book.it is also very slow , not to much action at all (so action fans beware)... it constantly confuses me and you have to go read back so many times to figure out how merlin came to be where he is. I am not saying it is a really horrible book, but if I cant read it in 3 tries..I dont know if I ever will be able to... <_<

Hey, I love "the old man and the sea", sure, the whole plot is in the first freaking sentence...

"He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the gulf stream and he hadn't taken a fish in 84 days"

That is the whole premise of the book...but Ernest Hemingway's simplicity and insight are excellent and he was one of the greatest drunks of all time so there...

the movie sucked big time...

You know what really sucks are any of the last 6 Stephen King books...man, that guy needs to give it up...

I have never been a big reader, but it always seems that they make you read the worst books in school. The few that stick out in my mind are the time machine and Great expectations. I didn't like the time machine because it was so over descriped, it almost put me to sleep. and there were all of these like twently letter words that had no meaning to me nor did I know what they meant. Great expectations was just to long, and didn't catch my interst. The only good part was when we watched the movie and (yes this may sound harsh) and Miss Havisham set on fire. it was very funny. That probably sound quite morbid, but it was funny! :D

Gadzooks, I must be in the wrong place. I liked Great Expectations. Dickens does a great job with character development and satire. Much of it is pretty subtle.

Brave New World was weak for pacing but great for ideas. Same with Wells' "Time Machine" for me.

I lost interest in King after "IT" and a few too many poorly translated movies.

I like the movie-izations of Jane Austen's books but I can't get into the books themselves. Bronte sisters, too.

Never got Hemingway at all. No longer willing to try either. The only one I can remember anymore is "A Farewell To Arms" and I give it the big thumbs down.
mylittlemoshpit
I tried reading Tolkein too... made me fall asleep.

I like his arty words, but Hawthorne bores me so much. His books are always so blah... like he tells this nice story in his exposition, and the last chapter of the book is everything after the exposition.
silentaurora
i have to agree about dickens..... i want to burn his books... lol j/k. now don't hurt me for what i'm about to say next, but i liked the old man in the sea, but only the end. haha, yea, we had to read it in 10th grade, and everyone hated it, except for me, and i didnt even finish it.... lol, i never finish books we have to read for english. here's one i'm really going to get beat for, but i really dislike the once and future king. i mean come on. boooooooooring!! sleep much? yes. muwahahaha
SailorStar16
HOW CAN YOU HATE DICKENS!! HE WAS ONE OF THE TRUE GREAT AUTHORS!! I LOVE HIS BOOKS!! DO YOU MEAN TO SAY THAT YOu HATE "A CHRISTMAS CAROL"!! OMG, I THINK I AM GOING TO BE SICK j/k!! JUST TEASING!! :P B)
Sun_Jewel
The worst book I have ever read would probably be The Time Machine, but that is only because I had to read that for class but if I am reading on my own and I don't like a book after the first few chapters I won't finish reading it.
SailorStar16
I don't think a lot of people like being forced to read! Or even if they do not like the book, cause then it mkaes it even worse! I hate reading crappy books!
pianogirl
Yeah, crappy books suck a lot!
Sun_Jewel
yeah it really depresses me when i don't like a book because then i feel bad :(
Chrono
OH MY GODS!!!!!! the freakin worse book I've ever read what a stupid book my English teacher made us read for her class it was calld Cold Sassy Tree....I feel asleep nearly every time I started to read that.
Sun_Jewel
yeah i don't see why school can't pick good books for us to read angry.gif
pianogirl
what do you expect, it's school!
Sun_Jewel
well ordinary people wasn't bad, and everyone is probably going to disagree with me but i liked great expectations
pianogirl
I'll admit, Ordinary People is one of the few books that I thought was really good, and your right april, I do disagree with you, I didn't like great expectations at all!
Sun_Jewel
yeah a lot of people didn't like that book, but i thought that it was really good
sidewinder
Chris... your a predator fan & you don't like sci fi ?

i totally scrap my post of saying that "a brave new world" is the worst book i've ever read as i've found a new one!

Victoria Beckham's autobiography! fecking hell...that woman needs to be force fed... some sense. i barely got past the first page as it was so stupid.

I have to admit the pics were humourous :D
pianogirl
who is she? I've never heard of her.
Ol' Lilac Eyes
Anything by Thomas Hardy...ANYTHING *shudders*

I can't say that I've ever read a "worst book" as if I don't like it I put it down after the first chapter and that's hardly what you could call read.........

It was Tolkien's love of language that led to him writing "Lord of the Rings" which goes some way to explaining why it's so wordy. Much as I enjoy the story I do find it a bit tiring to read myself. You should try reading "Bored of the Rings" - it's a cult classic - I believe it's back in print although the humour is somewhat dated now, but anyone over a "certain age" will probably appreciate it. :D

As for anything written by minor pop stars - does it qualify as literature?..............
Aslam Rasoolpuri
Before reading i chek the book and i read that which give me informations. I want to enjoy book ,therefore i 've no exprience of reading a horrible book

Who ,without choice or intentionaly read the horrible books, they can tell about these books
Cyfarwydd
I hated a "Seperate Peace". It was so bad.
Phoenix
Hmm..I've not read many of the books mentioned. I think I have to say, the worst book I have ever read is "Translations", by Brian Friel. It's a play about when England were taking over Ireland and anglicising it, or some such. I had to read it in English Lit before I dropped out, and I absolutely hated it! I nearly fell asleep in every single lesson we read it...worst book ever.

A close second is Charles Dickens books, I just really cannot get into them..bleh *shudders*
kittynn
derick i agree with you! i hate tolkein and unfortunatly my boyfriend LOVES him

kate, i have read much worse than a seperate peace... i have read one book that made that book look like the writing of god. actually i would cry for finny in front of all of my honors english class if it got me out of reading the book i should get to talking about.. wich i will now go into

in my advance placement world history class we had to read three books (out side of the big book in wich the curriculum was based off of)
everything falls apart- this book was hard to get into but had an amaizing ending (wich i never read because i could not get into the book lol)
maus I and maus II - any world war II buffs? it is a comic strip (that lasts two books long) where the germans are cats and the jews are mice it is really good! every nationallity has a different species. i loved it..
oh yeah bad books lol i can pay attention to any thing today!
THE WORST BOOK EVER
COD- this was the most bull shit 300-400 pages i have ever read.. it is so misleading! it starts off with a story that makes you want to kill yourself to a documentary of how cod was spread in trade taht makes you want to kill yourself! apparently it goes back to the story in the end.. or so my evil teacher says... salt also sucks it is the same thing only longer about salt!
Amay
I tend to like some part of almost any book I read, but in the seventh grade my teacher recommended The Old Man and the Sea to me as a good book, and I read it...I hated it then, but I don't anymore. So, it was my worst book, once upon a time.
HeavyMetalTeddyBear
As much as I can appreciate J.R.R. Tolkien's linguistics and the fact that this whole world sprouted solely from the man's imagination, he'll spend a page describing a god damn tree and then two paragraphs on a battle. However, LOTR is not the worst book I've ever read. To me, it's a toss up. From the Aliens series of books, "The Music of the Spears" was absolutely terrible. Another book I hated was "Ethan Frome", you want to talk about the most depressing book you've ever read, this is it. I mean literally, the guy has everything in his life go wrong, maybe something good will happen, and then even worse things happen as a result of which.
Lunarveil
Geez, listen to all of you people complaining about school force-feeding you crappy books! lol I suppose I was lucky - we had to read The Great Gatsby in American Lit and in English Lit, all we read was poetry and acted out Shakespeare - yes, in class, in costume. That was the best class I've ever had.
There was a book that we read in American Lit that I could not stand, so much that I can't even remember now (8 years later, mind you) what it was. I know I tried desperately to read it, as it was for an assignment, but just couldn't. I do remember a pop quiz we had on it though, and one of my friends (1/2 of the Lindeman twins and Lord of Spam Hell lol) Pete answered a question hilariously that's been a joke ever since - the question was "how did so and so feel when blah blah blah happened?" and Pete answered with "He felt like a Pepsi" ok yes, I was/am a dork and had dorky friends. But we hey, we had fun.

A book that I loved but that was difficult for me to read (aside from LOTR, great, but hard for me to read) was Treasure Island. Very good book, difficult to get accustomed to at first (then again I read it a long time ago). But Tom Clancy - CANNOT get into any of his stuff. Picked up Executive Orders because my husband read it and thought it was 'riveting' and I was SO BORED. Anything else that I've read by him was just as bad (to me lol). Good movies, boring books.
Duende
Aaaah , the techie-gun-toting-airplane-loving-shoot-em-up kid that I was loved the first few Tom Clancy books: Hunt, Red Storm, and one other I cannot recall, along with others of the Cold War high tech genre, Firefox being my all time choice in that realm. I cannot stand them now.

Worst books I read were by Hemmingway; still cannot stand them, not the plots, not his style, nothing. Had to read him in school and I'd rather have been eaten by a giant toad or burned in a lake of sulphur or frozen inthe Antarctic wastes.
Dark Fashions
willa cather... ick her style of writing is awful...

Mi Antonia SUCKED!!!!!!

any fucking thing by tom clancy -- i dont need to know how every damn bolt on a fucking submarine works!!!

and i want anne rice's head on a fucking plate!!!!!
all of her vampires are flangrantly gay (she must hate men) and you have to sift thru 800 pages of boring bullshit til u get to a few pages of anything exciting.

ohh --- and fuck dean koonz too --- he just pisses me off.
Dark Fashions
lol your a character....
Pandora
I can't believe I haven't added The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. The man's poetry was awesome, but as a novelist, he was no good.
Amay
That is by far the worst book I've ever tried to read. I got to about page seventy and couldn't stand it anymore!
Persephonie
:) ~ The one of the worst book I ever read was "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. It was an awful & painful story. Also boring, :coffee: I had to read it in high school.
Kuwdora
Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead" - I attempted to do this for the Fountainhead Scholarship. I actually read the whole fucking book and I couldn't possibly write the essay in good conscience afterwards. If there's a hell, I hope she's burning in the most despicable ring.

Also? Ann Coulter's "Treason" is another book I couldn't stomach.
iamnichole84
Gurahl, I can't believe you didn't like Ethan Frome! Well, I guess your reasons make sense, but I thought it was good.

Great Expectations--there's been a lot of talk about that--I tried to read it, but I only got half way through b/c I was so bored--AND I'M AN ENGLISH MAJOR!

Worst book I ever read was a fairly new book called The Stupidest Angel. Blech.
