My favs. are fantasy books. They allow the reader, through visualization, to become somebody that they could never be, see things they could never see, and do things that they could never do. Plus dragons are cool.

Tough to pick a single category for the poll. I like a variety of genres. In my younger days, it was almost exclusively sci-fi/fantasy. I get into reality fiction more these days. Never got the mystery or the romance bug.
An abbreviated list of fave authors: E. Annie Proulx, Italo Calvino, Ursula LeGuin, John Irving, Isaac Asimov, Arthur Clarke, PG Wodehouse, Margaret Atwood, Doris Lessing.

I also read everything I can get my hands on!! To limit yourself to one genre is just limiting your brain to take in more and more information!!

Very true Johnny.
I will admit, my favourite genre is horror. But I read a whole range...from, comedy, to horror, to animal, to real life, to fantasy, to romance, to anything.
( Whoo! 1000th post! Hehe, go me! )

I like fantasy... I like for my mind, my imagination to be worked, to be expressed. Its the one true place where my dragon's can be real. Science fiction is the next best thing.

I read Fantasy exclusively...but I read others as well. I read alot of Emmerson's works, and I like his Essay on Nature. And as of late..i have been ready fantasy/romance books. One called the Daughter of the forest..very good, not alot of action..but very good and heartfelt. (sorry..got off track) But.. I mainly read Fantasy. for many of the same reasons that Amy does, to let my imagination make the worls in my head..and to see Their lives being played out as i read on. Its great.

I like reading all types of books because I just love reading. I don't base what I read based its genre I base it on how good the book is. If I had to pick a favorite though it would be books like Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia because I find those are easier to get really into for me, but I will read any type of book if it is good.

I can be pretty content with almost any type of book. I couldn't just read one type cause that would get quite boring after a while.

Jul 23 2002, 04:58 AM
well i think that would depend on the type of book. for example i don't think i would get bored with books like Harry Potter

oh, that's true, i meant more that reading on genre continuously like drama all the time would get kind of boring, you need to switch it up a bit.

Jul 25 2002, 12:23 AM
for me it doesn't matter as long as the book is good

wouldn't you think though that after a while of reading the same type of book they would become predictable and boring?

i like fantasy the best. i dont think i could ever get bored of fantasy coz theres so many diferent things in it. i like the way i can just loose myself in an unreal world and not think about anything else or be anywhere else i dont want to be.
my next best is real life stories because you put yourself in someones shoes and realize what its like to be like them.

I like learning more about real people and real things... my mind doesn't handle all that goes on in fantasy, lol. I like something I can imagine as being real... an ironic statement, yes.

If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry.

I like reading books with historical places and people. I tend to lean more towards horror/sci fi, but I also enjoy a good romance every now and then. But other than that, I like to read Informational books.

Fantasy mainly, although I'll also read SF and horror.
Michael Moorcock's Elric series of stories is my fav.
Used to read a lot of Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison and some Robert Silverberg.
Macbeth is my fav though by William Shakespeare, and even though I had to read it in school, my teacher made all the difference; had us watch the film as well to help us understand the language and the story.

Adam,
An interesting post! My faves are mystery and romance, a definite + is if they can work the two in the same book.

I'm usually reading and/or listening to several books at a time. I love biography/autobiographies, but also like a good thriller, too. Listening to Michael Connelly's 'The Lincoln Lawyer' right now in my car, but will listen to almost anything that keeps my interest.
Particularly liked Anderson Cooper's bio, which he reads on the CD.
I try to mix it up and have a non-fiction, a good novel, and perhaps something a bit more intense at the same time.
Favorites of the past year or so include "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, "Modoc" by Ralph Helfer, and "Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield, to name a few. I've always got a huge stack ahead of me to read. I used to work in a book store, which is basically like putting a junkie in a pharmaceutical shop, and have book shelves filled with new reads to peruse.

I like reading what I think is referred to as 'social realism'. Usually it's quite depressing- at least one of the characters will have some kind of psychotic and/or emotional problem.
When I'm in more of a cheery mood, though, I read comedies and romance (just so long as the romance isn't too 'lovey-dovey-fingers-down throat', if you get what I'm saying). Very rarely do I read fantasy novels. I appreciate JK Rowling is a very good writer, but Harry Potter bores the hell out of me. Can't be doing with wizards and spells and all the things that come with it.

there should have been a slot for spy or intrigue books.
i read almost everything i can get my greedy hands on -- i average six books a week.
i love spy novels and any books about assassins. sci-fi, horror, and detective books.
but assassin books are my favorite.
love war books, and some poetry, but not much, and some fantasy.
also =--every damn book daniel silva has written, ditto for dan simmons, and john sanford, and stephen king.

I'm actually not a big reader. I always try to read something by Nietzche, or some good ol' Buddhist literature, but I always get sidetracked somehow and lose interest. The only ones I seem to stick with these days are music books - reference books, biographies and the like

I'm finding I like mystery/thriller books (Koontz's in particular). I also subscribe/get samples of poetry magazines that I think I'll like, and I'm usually right. Although every so often I'll get something in which the material is way over my head or just sucks...
