My name, J**** L*****, now has much significance for me. Before looking it up for this project, I knew that "J****" means youthful. It was a surprise to discover that "L*****" means warrior maiden. Since a maiden is often considered young, I have combined the meaning of my names to “maiden of war.” Many years ago, before I knew this, I chose the name of "rainrose" to describe myself and use as a screen name for the various websites I visit. This name has many meanings itself. For the surface reasons, I am like a rose living in the rainy northwest. From there, the symbolism extends. A rose has many thorns, yet is still considered the most beautiful flower. Only certain people can handle the thorns to reach the rose through the rain. Rain is ultimately good for the rose; it enhances its beauty. A sign of renewal, rain cleanses and purifies. It represents hardships in life and their habit of making people and flowers grow. To different people, a rose can be depressing, beautiful, or mysterious. A flower simply represents friendship while a rose seems to be the universal symbol of love. Hope shines brightest in the darkness, just as a single rose seems all the more beautiful in the mist of rain. When I decided on the name “rainrose,” I was quite interested in hippies and “rainrose” fit my mindset. After discovering the meaning of my own name, I quite enjoy the sound of “maiden of war.” Unfortunately, I have had my current screen names and e-mail address for so long that to change it would take time and effort for a change that has not had much of an impact on me. Even after discovering the meaning of my given name, I found that I love the meanings, personality, effort, and thought I put into my chosen name even more.
